SEPTEMBER 2023 UPDATE: YouTube Premium is no longer offering the 99 cents offer, so we recommend capitalizing on the much more lucrative signup bonuses at the bottom of this post.
What Is YouTube Premium?
YouTube Premium is a subscription service offered by YouTube, the world's most popular video platform. It was originally launched on November 14, 2014, as Music Key, and it offered ad-free music video streaming from labels partnered with YouTube and Google Play Music. Music Key was then revised and relaunched as YouTube Red the next year, however, making all videos on the platform ad-free instead of only music videos.
The service was once again rebranded to YouTube Premium in May of 2018, and it offered a wide range of new features, which I'll explain in the section below.
YouTube Premium Features
YouTube Premium has a few features on top of what you get from being a regular YouTube user. Here are my four favourite features of YouTube Premium:
- Zero ads: No more pre-video ads, midroll ads, or ads in your YouTube feed. Instead, the videos you watch will start playing as soon as you click on them, which doesn't sound that important but is actually really nice.
- Download videos: YouTube Premium allows users to download videos and watch them offline, which is ideal for commutes or flights when you don't have Internet access (or don't want to use your mobile data).
- YouTube Music Premium: YouTube Premium subscribers can listen to millions of songs without any ads, similar to Spotify Premium.
- Play in the background: YouTube Premium users can minimize the YouTube mobile app while still watching/listening to videos. This is great for listening to music or podcasts on YouTube and also ideal if you're on the move and don't want to have the YouTube app open all the time.
How To Get YouTube Premium's Free Trial
There are two different ways to get a free trial (or nearly free trial) of YouTube Premium:
#1 YouTube Premium Referral Link
Signing up through a referral link from an existing YouTube Premium subscriber is the easiest way to get a special trial offer. Though it's not technically free, by using our special referral link below, you'll get 3 months of YouTube Premium for just 99 cents.
Since you'll be charged the full amount ($11.99 USD in the US, or $11.99 CAD in Canada) after your 3-month trial is over, it's a good idea to cancel your YouTube Premium subscription as soon as you sign up. That way, if you aren't satisfied and want to cancel it, you've already done so, and if you want to continue the service, you can just subscribe again when your trial runs out.
Pro tip: By using apps that pay you to play games, you can easily make enough to pay for a YouTube Premium subscription.
#2 Direct Offer From YouTube
YouTube regularly changes the offer it promotes, which means you can get a 3-month (or even a 4-month) free trial just by looking inside your YouTube app. This isn't completely consistent, though; sometimes the offer will only be for one month, so you must check regularly.
Note: Some users have reported that the 4-month free trial is much more likely to receive if you use Incognito Mode in your browser.
How Do I Cancel My 3-Month YouTube Trial?
To cancel your YouTube Premium subscription and/or free trial, follow these steps:
- Go to YouTube.com or the YouTube mobile app.
- Click your profile icon in the top-right.
- Find and select the “Paid Memberships” option in the drop-down menu.
- Cancel your subscription.
